To be fair, I really don't like the additive nature of Kodi's forward and back. All so that I could jump back just five seconds when I miss the end of a subtitle rather then ten seconds. you can see where a simple problem starts becoming multiple smaller and smaller steps. and had to get it to work by changing the keyboard, and had to look up what to change the keyboard to. It was annoying and I had to learn it via a youtube video. Didn't want to go down the fractal rabbit hole where each step leads to three more steps. I didn't have the network setup on that pi, but I suppose that would have just been another three or four steps. Or was sudo vi really the best and most correct answer? Either way, is there a way I could have logged in as root or been able to change the permissions of that director to allow me to edit a file there? I watched a youtube video on vi while I was waiting.Įdit: ok, well, I created the file in vi, which isn't what I wanted to do, but it is done.Ĭan someone let me know what I could have done in the gui (x11 I think it is) to have been able to create the file? I'm not really sure if there was anything because this pi doesn't have a network connection and I don't have other text editors installed (maybe one of the preinstalled compilers has a text editor that could have handled xml?). Trying to figure out where to set it as US.Įdit: may have it set to us keyboard now, will see if I can figure out vi enough to create a small xml file. I tried using vi to actually put stuff in the file, but I'm getting the symbol when I try to put quotes (using insert mode) and when I try and press '=', it seems to crash, gives me an error about registers, and wipes out my line.Įdit: google is saying it means my keyboard is set at UK in this Raspbian. OK, just so that I wouldn't give up, I'm still trying stuff while waiting for someone with more linux chops to show up, I went ahead and used 'sudo vi advancedsettings.xml' the pressed ':w'. Would like to avoid using the console and opening vi with sudo or something. Once I have permission to create and edit the file, the rest should be easy (I hope). I've only ever played in Raspbian a little, and not for very long. There is probably a very simple fix for this since I can't find other people having the same problem. The permissions say the owner is root, and that only the owner can modify files.

However, I can't create the advancedsettings.xml file there, as permissions are denied.

The usb drive mounted, and I found the right directory (/storage/.kodi/userdata/). It's been forever since I played in Raspbian, so I figured I'd use the GUI.

I realize that I can't just access the microSD card in my windows machine, so I put the card in a usb card reader and plugged it into another Pi running Raspbian (older version, older pi, it's what I had handy). Ten seconds is too far of a jump back, so I was jsut going to add a 5 second step. I'm watching subtitled stuff and reading it out loud for my significant other, and sometimes I can't finish a line before the character moves on. OK, I just want to add in a 5 second step in seeksteps in the advancedsettings.xml file for my Kodi box (newest version of Kodi).
